On April 22, 2023 at approximately 12:40 AM, a Telecommunicator collapsed while on duty in the Communications Center of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) from cardiac arrest. Telecommunicator J. Nelson verbally tried to gain the attention of this Telecommunicator when Communications Supervisor A. Conrad noticed this individual was slumped in the chair and was unresponsive. A. Conrad made an announcement on the radio advising all units to hold traffic unless there was an emergency due to an emergency in Communications. A. Conrad went into the EMS Communications Center next to FCSO Communications and requested medical assistance then helped lower the Telecommunicator onto the floor. J. Nelson found that the Telecommunicator did not have a pulse and immediately started CPR. A. Conrad went to the EMS Communications center again to advise them that the Telecommunicator was not breathing. County Fire Shift Supervisor J. Smith from EMS came over to assist and brought their AED with him. A. Conrad announced on the radio that CPR was in progress and requested an FCSO unit to meet the ambulance and fire personnel at the main entrance of the FCSO building. J. Smith attached the AED and administered one shock then J. Nelson resumed performing CPR. The Telecommunicator began breathing and slowly regained consciousness while J. Smith provided oxygen. EMS transported the Telecommunicator to Baptist Hospital for further medical treatment. During this incident, Telecommunicator M. Martin single-handedly maintained all radio traffic and incoming phone calls while her coworkers provided emergency assistance to the Telecommunicator. Due to everyone working as a team and their quick lifesaving actions, A. Conrad, J. Nelson and M. Martin are proudly being recognized as Civilian Staff Members of the Month.
