Synopsis and Discussion

Canadian wildfire smoke has arrived in the Triad. Particulate readings this morning were very low so despite hourly values now in the mid Code Yellow range, daily averages will net out in the lower Code Yellow range. Filtered sunshine and periods of overcast skies so far today coupled with the threat of some storms drifting southeastward out of Virginia will keep O3 readings in the upper Code Green range. The trough over the Eastern US that has allowed smoke to dive southward out of Canada will begin to weaken and will eventually be replaced by a ridge as we head toward midweek. A backdoor cold front looks to sweep through tomorrow, followed by a weak secondary boundary on Monday. Fine particle concentrations are expected to remain Moderate on both days although a cleaner push of air may arrive by midday on Monday, offering a reprieve from the smoke. Ozone readings will hover near the Code Green/Yellow threshold. By Tuesday, low-level southwesterly flow will begin to bring some of the diffuse smoke that was pushed south and west on Monday back over our area. Moderate air quality is expected to persist with a slight uptick in ozone production expected. (Perrotte)
