The 1,000th Subscriber to NextReads!

Mary VanScoy is the 1,000th subscriber to NextReads, the Library’s e-newsletter service to find out about new and recommended books! Mary won a new bestseller, our Centennial Cookbook, and a Friends of the Library bookbag.

“I needed a new book to start this weekend,” Mary said with a smile. “I never win anything, so I’m thrilled!” Mary became an FCPL patron in 1986 when her family moved here from Kansas. She loves the Kernersville branch, saying, “I’m so glad we’re going to get a new library.” She sees a bright future with better spaces and more meeting rooms, a place to “chill out with comfy chairs” and maybe “coffee and munchies.”

Mysteries are her favorite, but she signed up for several NextReads newsletters from her home computer. NextReads has already pointed her in the direction of some titles she’s interested in. Now she knows what’s new and interesting from home, but she always enjoys browsing at Kernersville to pick up a book. She wants to learn how to download audiobooks soon.

Mary often takes advantage of placing holds online to reserve books she wants to checkout and read. Her favorite book lately? Mary Higgins Clark’s Just Take My Heart. She enjoys Jodi Piccolt and Jan Karon titles. She recommends the narrator of the Jan Karon audiobooks to everyone. Mary says she will also enjoy her new cookbook because she loves cookbooks.

One of Mary’s favorite things to do is “read a book so good that you don’t want it to end as the sun comes up!” She reports that this “confuses the dog,” her cocker spaniel, Cooper.

We are honored to feature Mary VanScoy as our 1,000th NextReads subscriber on our website. We salute all of our community readers like Mary. Mary promises to be an inspiration to her grandchildren — Andrew, Aaliyah, Leo, and Jimmy — as a lifelong reader and learner. Thank you, Mary!

To Sign Up for NextReads

Get your very own newsletters by clicking on any of the NextReads buttons on our website. It’s also available from the Online Resources page.

No library card is necessary—just an email address—for library website visitors and patrons to subscribe to any of the 31 different subject and genre newsletters. List topics ranging from Biography and Memoir to Fantasy to New York Times Bestsellers are sent on a regular basis, and include up to 12 titles. Subscribers can link directly to the library catalog from books of interest, and place a hold immediately. Even those library patrons without email addresses can take advantage of the lists by viewing them online, either at the library or from the internet. FCPL librarians are the newsletter editors, so they put Forsyth County customers first!

NextReads is an important part of our outreach to the community. We can better serve many library patrons who are less able to visit our facilities in person to browse the shelves and book displays to find something new to read. Our newsletters are our opportunity to bring the library to them—whether they are at work, school, home, or on the road. Our website and catalog are considered a “virtual” branch of the library, open 24 hours a day, available 365 days a year!
