Faith and Identity in the Upcountry September 16

Dr. Douglas R. Porter’s presentation will focus on the relationship between religion and dissent (particularly opposition to slavery and the Confederate cause) in the upcountry region during the antebellum and Civil War eras. The areas in and around Forsyth, Guilford, Surry and Yadkin counties were well known during the American Civil War and are of particular interest to Dr. Porter.

Dr. Porter, who is from Mount Airy, NC, received his M.A. in History from North Carolina State University and his Ph.D. in United States History to 1877 with minors in American Religious History and Africa & African Diaspora from the University of Mississippi.

Dr. Porter is currently the Historic Sites Manager for the City of Raleigh.
